More official comment on Michael Phelps
 from the LA Times:

IOC: "Michael Phelps is a great Olympic champion.  He apologized for his inappropriate behavior.  We have no reason to doubt his sincerity and his commitment to continue to act as a role model.''

USA Swimming:  "We are certainly disappointed in Michael's behavior.  Our Olympic champions are role models who are looked up to by people of all ages, especially young athletes who have their own aspirations and dreams.  That said, we realize that none among us is perfect.  We hope Michael can learn from this incident and move forward in a positive way.''

Speedo (which gave Phelps a $1-million bonus for his 8 gold medals):  "In light of Michael Phelps' statement yesterday, Speedo would like to make it clear it does not condone such behavior, and we know that Michael truly regrets his actions.  Michael Phelps is a valued member of the Speedo team and a great champion.  We will do all that we can to support him and his family.''

Omega:  the Associated Press reported the watch company was "strongly committed''  to its relationship with Phelps. "The current story in the press involves Michael Phelps' private life and is, as far as Omega is concerned, a non-issue.''

   -- Philip Hersh

So some of his oldest endorsement deals re still supporting him. Maybe the newer ones are waiting to take a cue from them

I appreciate everyone contributing with the updates. Really.

I'm curious as to what the Boys & Girls Club has to say about any of this. I wasn't really so much concerned aboyt Phelps losing the same sponros who stuck with him during the DUI mess, but I was concerned about Mazda and Subway--whose commercial never aired last night. I'm worried about what affect this may have on MP's foundation, and if the B & G C will choose to break away from Phelps because of this.

don't worry. i am sure octagon is currently working on a strategy. bb will give them televised apologies and conferences on the subject, just like after the DUI mess...

mazda and subway are only waiting until the scandal blows over
3pronged_spear on February 2nd, 2009 09:09 pm (UTC)
however, you are right bb might lose some contracts...

And if he loses Peter Carlisle somewhere along the way, even better.

"And if he loses Peter Carlisle somewhere along the way, even better."

despite the evil he represents, i respect this guy because for someone who comes from the most controversial sports environment (id. boxing) i think he's doing his best to match the squeaky clean olympic requirements. however, i believe fifi should go separate ways with him too...

They just announced on one of the local radio sports shows that MP lost $2.2million because of Subway pulling their ad last night. Don't know if that's true or not, I've been trying to find something on the web that confirms that.

Wow, I expect it costs Subway more than 2.2 mill to pull the plug...
tooh1999tooh1999 on February 2nd, 2009 11:54 pm (UTC)
From what they're saying, Subway had the option to run a different ad in the same time slot but choose not to run anything.

What for? Everyone knows Phelpsy has signed a deal with Subway, putting another ad up may make this situation worse with speculation.

Probably because they had already paid for the airtime and it was just going to go to waste, which it did anyways.

I just posted a new article about some of his sponsors. The gist of it is that Hilton and PureSport are supporting him, the Rosetta Stone, ATT, and Power Bar contracts had already ended, and Visa, Subway, and Kellogg's haven't talked yet.

i knew omega would stick with him as they had stood with ian thorpe about the doping allegation .

Avid Twitter user Ashton Kutcher stands up...
Before i log out and go to bed, here is what i just copy-pasted from Google. i don't think it "deserves" a special entry, but it's cute to read though. Ashton Kutcher's fans, if you're tuned on mpf...

Ashton Kutcher’s Twittering and video posting about a noisy neighbor landed him in hot water last week, but it hasn’t stopped the actor from staying busy on the mirco-blogging Web site.

Kutcher was inspired to blog about Olympic great Michael Phelps’ acknowledgment of a photo in a British newspaper, which showed the swimmer smoking marijuana.

“I wish the media would kill this Phelps story. God forbid he hit a bong. Go ask your 20 year old kid what they did last weekend,” Kutcher wrote Monday morning.

“I’m not saying it was a smart move. But he doesn’t need to be publicly outed for it. Who ever put the pic out is an a--!” the actor continued. “He’s a good kid. BTW he could be a real douche but he’s not. Maybe the media can quit dragging his d--- in the dirt.”

Kutcher said he does not smoke marijuana, but understands how the Olympic star could have made the mistake.

“I don’t smoke and haven’t in quite some time,” Kutcher continued. “But I’m not immune to a lapse in good judgement (sic) from time to time.”

Re: Avid Twitter user Ashton Kutcher stands up...
i had little doubt about the kutchers' reality show project, although i guess it was a idea thrown randomly on the table saying we like this guy, but god, i sooo wish ashton could punk bb!!! i don't know if the show is still on in the us, coz i haven't seen for a while in europe.

Its not on anymore. Ironically, Justin Timberlake admitted he was high when he was punk'd by Kutcher.

I think this is really sad and stupid. Get over people. We all learned that Michael is human and he makes mistakes just like you and me and everyone else that is saying boo on him. Look in your mirror and shut the hell up. Live and let Live!
